Satkhira, May 21, 2025: Three impostors posing as a magistrate, police officer, and journalist were caught red-handed by locals while extorting money in Shyamnagar, Satkhira. The incident occurred around 5:30 PM on Wednesday (May 21) at the ‘Sonar Bangla’ bakery in Nurnagar Bazar.
The apprehended individuals are Amirul Islam (42) from Ganpati village, Kaliganj upazila, who posed as a magistrate; Joy Sardar (30) from Nagorghat village, Basan Thana, Gazipur, who claimed to be a police officer; and Faruk Hossain (45) from Uttara, Dhaka, who pretended to be a journalist.
According to locals, the trio entered the bakery, intimidated the shop owner by posing as a magistrate, and extorted 3,000 taka. When they demanded more money, suspicions arose, leading locals to detain them and inform the police.
Shyamnagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Humayun Kabir Molla stated that the impostors initially took 3,000 taka and demanded additional funds, which raised suspicion among locals, who then apprehended and handed them over to the police. He added that the group is allegedly involved in prior extortion activities in various areas of Shyamnagar. Legal proceedings against the three are underway.
